Geology: the rock under your feet
The floor you are stepping on today is made of clay, slime, sandstone and conglomerate (landslide stones and cement).
This comes from 22 million years ago when this landscape was a plain where water ran freely creating channels that were blocked by different sediments (paleochannels).
Romans knew exactly where the sandstone was and by its extraction they changed the landscape dramatically. By emptying the mountain, big blocks of terrain destabilized and moved creating the geomorphological profile we admire today.
The stubborn cierzo wind (very common here) completed the view creating suggestive rock formations by erosion.
Know better our other QVADRARIA routes
You will perfectly see Roman quarries with pickaxe marks, trenches for the quarrying of the stone blocks, crane marks and some abandoned ashlar stones. Everything has been discovered and interpreted by the Archaeology team of Cascante.
