QVADRARIA

Paths of landscape and memory

QVADRARIA

is a route that can be travelled by foot or by bike which follows QR code spots linked to audio guides. By listening to them, you will enjoy and understand the rich heritage that surrounds you: 2,000 year old Roman quarries and 22 million year old geological forms under the vast sky of Cascante, in the Ribera de Navarra (South Navarra).

But, above all, YOU are QVADRARIA.

You transform the territory into LANDSCAPE AND MEMORY only by observing it.

Would you like to discover othe QVADRARIA routes?

I'd love it!

You will  perfectly see Roman quarries with pickaxe marks, trenches for the quarrying of the stone blocks, crane marks and some abandoned ashlar stones. Everything has been discovered and interpreted by the Archaeology team of Cascante.

SHORT ROUTE

OR ROUTE OF THE THREE QUARRIES

DISTANCE: 2,16 Kms

DIFFICULTY: EASY

This is the basic route that comprises three excavated quarries, within them Piecordero I Villae Quarry (the start of the route, next to the car park).

You will walk through the most elevated area where huge blocks of ground have moved leaving geological strata in sight. You will enjoy a wonderful 360 degrees view in height.

We did the Short Route together with my children (10 and 13 years old). I learned many things about the Roman quarries and how the ashlars were formerly extracted. I found it very educational to go with children. They also enjoyed it a lot.

I fully recommend it!

Julia, Z. H

DISTANCE: 6,97 kms

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

This route contains the Short Route (it starts in the same place). It also includes the fourth excavated quarry.  All the remaining quarries have not been  excavated (you will discover yourself as your eyes get familiar to their evidences in the rocks).

Besides  the impressive views, you will walk thought the Cañada Real (Spanish seasonal migration route of sheep) until you get to the vulture feeder. You will walk towards the starting point observing all this from below, next to the allotments.

COMPLETE

ROUTE

OR ROUTE OF THE QUARRIES AND THE LANDSCAPE

We spent a great morning touring these places, which although known, are always pleasant to visit. The audio guides helped us to understand a bit better what we were seeing.

CYCLIST ROUTE

DISTANCE: 13,67 K.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

This route is very similar to the Complete Route. It starts from Piecordero I Villae Quarry and comes back to it by rural roads. However, if you want to see the rest of the excavated quarries and follow all the QR codes, in some points you will have to leave the rural roads and get to the signposted places (in the cyclist route you only have access to QR codes 1, 9 and 10)

A route with slopes, descents fun and without danger. We were lucky enough to see a harrier and a skunk. Very enjoyable.
